Grits
Grits is a stone ground corn cereal type food of Native American origins. Very similar to a porridge, grits is known to be a Southern breakfast staple in America. Grits can be eaten as a sweet dish with milk and honey or as a savory dish, as in cheesy grits or shrimp and grits. Grits are becoming very popular in use in gourmet Italian and Mediterranean restaurants.

In a small pot, bring 2 cups of water, 1 1/4 cups milk, and salt to a boil. Slowly stir in grits. Stir continuously and thoroughly until grits are completely mixed. Let the pot return to a boil, cover pot with a lid, lower the temperature to simmer, and cook for approximately 30 minutes stirring occasionally. When finished, add in your choice of toppings. Cheese is a very popular addition.
